Mike and Beth talk about some national no-kill news and views with Nathan Winograd of the No-Kill Advocacy Center. He's been traveling the country and keeping his ear to the ground as New Yorkers speak out, California politicians waffle, and Florida takes a first big step.

We also meet with Alan Peters, Exec. Dir of Can-Do-Canines, an assistance dog organization that matches helping dogs to a vast array of special needs and clients. They continue to push the boundaries and expectations we have of helping dogs.

Today Mike and Beth welcome one of our favorite guests, Tammy Thies, Exec. Dir of the Wildcat Sanctuary in Minnesota. We'll hear updates from the sanctuary, learn about how she engages interns and volunteers. And we'll also hear some of her thoughts about last year's sensational news of wild captive animals set loose in Ohio. Has anything changed as a result of that tragedy?

We'll also enjoy ...hearing some thoughts from Michael Mountain, founder of Zoenature.org.

In the second hour, we'll revisit a conversation we had with Aimee Sadler, Training and Behavior Program Director from Longmont Humane Society in Colorado. Her work challenges us to think that we can help more dogs become successful candidates for adoption.

In Mike and Beth's first show of 2012, we're joined for an extended segment with Nathan Winograd of the No-Kill Advocacy Center. We'll cover the exciting new initiative called "Just One Day." What could happen if shelters across the country committed to just one day of full-on implementation of lifesaving programs?

Hear more about the 2012 No-Kill Conference, and learn about a little cat named ...Jimmy whose untimely death is challenging the policies, practices and rhetoric of the Minneapolis & St. Paul area Animal Humane Society.

We'll also stir up some dirt and some spring thoughts as we meet Diane Ott Whealy, Co-Founder and V.P. of Seed Savers Exchange. Their commitment and pledge to preserve and propagate heirloom seeds is spreading to farmers and gardeners everywhere. Hear more about the safe seed pledge and why you might want to take it!

Nathan announces the "winners" of the Phillis Wright awards. Phillis was a benchmark killer of animals in shelters. She made no appology for that. She was also a VP of HSUS. These so-called "awards" are given to leading killing appologists that keep killing in spite of readily available alternatives.

Join us on Animal Wise Radio for one of our favorite shows of the year! Nathan Winograd of the No-Kill Advocacy Center announces the "great meddlers" of 2011. Known more properly as the Henry Bergh Awards, these awards recognize some amazing folks who are changing how sheltering and animal welfare is done in our country, just as Henry Bergh did when the animal welfare movement began in the U.S. Mike and Beth are absolutely inspired by these leaders, and you will be inspired too. Please join in this end of year celebration.

We discuss the seminal court case of Medlen vs. Strickland which held that an animal control shelter that "mistakenly" killed a family's dog must pay for sentimental damages. What does Medlen teach us about dogs and who our friends are? More importantly, how can we use Medlen to further the cause of animal shelter reform?

Today on Animal Wise Radio, Mike and Beth invite Dr. Laurel Neme back to talk about her ongoing work as an author, lecturer and radio host of The Wildlife. Her passion for protecting our wild animals is coupled with a concern for people. How can we successfully live with wildlife? How do we create solutions and policies that can work for people and animals?

We're also pleased to meet Dogs Natu...rally Magazine editor in chief, Dana Scott. She has a few ideas about your dog's health and how you can protect it. Those ideas may be different than you think.

And Nathan Winograd of the No-Kill Advocacy Center muses about Austin Pets Alive winning a major cash award from the ASPCA, an organization that had recently singled out Austin no-kill advocates as radicals and extremists whose message must be quashed.

Bill will explain what science lies behind concerns about these new food crops, and why the fight goes... on.

Tammy Thies will also join us to talk about winters at The Wildcat Sanctuary in Minnesota. She'll weigh in on recent news of captive exotics released by their owner in Ohio, and the tragic outcome.

And don't miss Nathan Winograd of the No-Kill Advocacy Center as he muses about flash mobs. Animal Wise Radio is LIVE today at Noon Central.

We discuss the blank check some people are willing to give the large national groups arguing that because "they do so much good," we should not criticize them even when they do terrible, life-ending things too. In the case of PETA, that means seek out and kill 2,000 animals a year, in the case of HSUS, it means defend abusive shelters and defeat legislation which would have ended the cruel gas chamber, and in the case of the ASPCA, it means work to allow 25,000 animals a year to be needlessly killed.

Two years ago, Ed Sayres, the ASPCA's hard-hearted, small-minded President, ordered Oreo, an abused dog, killed. A law to prevent that from ever happening again in a NY shelter was also killed by Sayres. Since that time, the number of animals killed in NY shelters who rescued groups were willing to save has exceeded 35,000. Lined up side-by-side, the dead bodies... would form a line 10 miles long. Put another way, they would fill virtually every seat at Fenway Park. The killing of Oreo and lifesaving legislation is not an aberration. And we have to stop pretending that it is. It is part of a larger attack against animal lovers that culminated this past week in the ASPCA's release of a handbook, "Tactics of the Extremist Agenda," to help shelters fight off reformers in order to continue killing.

Tune into Animal Wise Radio for a show bursting with news and updates. Mike and Beth will share the latest rhetoric from the Animal Humane Society about the MN Companion Animal Protection Act, and some shocking updates about notorious puppy mill operator Kathy Bauck. Also joining us, Peter Wolf, blogger at Vox Felina, updates us on the trial of Nico Dauphine who worked for the Smithsonian Migrat...ory Bird Center, and was accused of poisoning cats in a managed colony. Her research has been used as to support eradication as the solution for free roaming cats. We'll also celebrate some great work and no-kill success with Ellen Jefferson of Austin Pets Alive. One year after its release, we'll revisit the film "Troubled Waters." Brian Devore of the Land Stewardship Project helps us look back to see what has changed since this powerful film about the impact of large scale farming on Mississippi River waters. Nathan Winograd of the No Kill Advocacy Center joins us to share some thoughts about why some organizations persist in rebranding and recycling failed programs.

I keep saying we are a nation of companion animal lovers. And recently, a listener of Animal Wise Radio responded with questions: How can we be a nation of animal lovers in the face of 8 million animals entering "shelters" every year? In the face of half of those animals being put to death? In the face of animal neglect and cruelty? We'll tackle them today on Nathan Winograd UNLEASHED.

Today, we focus on the fight for No Kill in Dallas, Texas, the Twin Cities, Minnesota and elsewhere and ramifications for other communities. While Dallas No Kill advocates need to stay vigilant as killing apologists and anti-reform activists are trying to co-opt the No Kill movement, in the larger sense this signals a step closer to the demise of the status quo.

The ASPCA and Ed Sayers try to take credit for Austin's no kill success, even though, according to nearly everyone in Austin, they were part of the original problem. It is a hot topic and a great conversation!

We'll shine light on the myths, falsehoods and fear that Animal Humane Society is spreading to their members and the public about MN CAPA - a bill that quite simply seeks to save more shelter animals.
