EMAILS:
Hey guys,

Regarding last week’s discussion about Foxconn and other Apple factories working conditions. The one thing that I don’t hear anybody saying is that Foxconn is actually one of the better factories to work at in China.
A coworker of mine who has been to several big manufacturing plants in China/Asia (including Foxconn) says that there are dozens if not hundreds of plants from big clothing and electronics manufacturers who do not provide any oversight or supervision in the way that Apple does.
Because of all the press surrounding Foxconn, Apple is working to improve things by placing supervisors in the factories and pressuring change. Clearly, Apple can and should do more (being the biggest player in the area) but they are also taking all the heat in the press so that these other companies have no motivation to improve conditions because they are ignored by the media.
Just wanted to point that out, I think it would be great if Apple and Foxconn completely reformed their practices, but the fact is that it’s a problem with the whole system and not just one company. Jesse Potter”

Hey Buzz Crew,
I’ve heard discussion about Google’s new privacy policy all over the place, generally balanced but with discernible “”anti”" vibes. Well, just now, Facebook showed me an ad for a Commander Shepard Hoodie! That is awesome! Somebody sold them the right information! I wouldn’t mind if Google propositioned cool goods like that to me. Just saying.
You guys are awesome! Keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Mark from PA
—–
Hey Buzz Crew,
Like everyone else I received Google’s updated privacy policy and it

is indeed shorter and much easier to read. I have edited and

re-phrased it to make it even shorter and easier to read:
We are Google. You will be assimilated. Your biological and

technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is

futile.
Love the Show,

Jonathan from Chicago

When interviewing somebody about their website, can you PLEASE spell the website. I *listen* to the show in the car. I was totally interested in the interview about givit.com, but became frustrated because I thought you were saying getit.com, and I couldn’t find the stupid site using my smartphone. Finally found its spelling in the show notes, but, man, what a hassle. Same thing for that website jean simmons was promoting. Or the dating site based on your location. And I could go on and on. On this week's Buzz Out Loud, Brian and Molly take Apple (and others) to task for unsafe and inhumane working conditions at consumer electronics factories in China. It's time for Apple and us, the consumers, to demand better. Plus, Google's privacy policy changes, Netflix's big bounce-back, and Computer Love. And meet Givit, the way to share private videos of your kids or, um, other things.

Hey Buzz Crew,

In episode #1577 you guys talked about the new iTunes U and what that could mean for schools that want to adopt this technology. My high school in Ohio has been using iPads as digital workbooks since the start of the 2010-11 school year, so I thought I should share a few details about how the system was implemented. My high school is a private catholic school, so I understand that it may not be representative of how public schools could implement it, but I figure the information will be useful nonetheless. As part of the cost of attendance, a $200 fee was added as a “”rental fee”" for use of the ipad for a year. Each year a student attends the school they pay the fee, and get to keep the iPad upon graduation. Students can even keep the iPad on summer breaks and use it however they choose. It’s not a perfect system, since if a student starts at the school as a freshman, the kid is paying $300 extra dollars than paying for the iPad outright, but the $200 annual fee does cover cost of the workbooks apps, and also what amounts to an insurance policy if the student breaks the thing. The system has worked really well here, as the interactive features that the workbooks provide are a significant upgrade over the standard workbook. In regards to your concerns about how tech-savvy some of the teaching staff could be, its actually worked out nicely here, as the students seem eager to aid the staff in becoming tech literate, which in turn has had a positive effect on the relationship between the teachers and students.Like I said, it’s not a perfect system, but its worked out really well here and the revamped iTunes U should only aid that.

The same people who did the Eagle Cam last year are doing the same with a momma bear, and her cub. They placed a camera inside a bear den in Minnesota. You can watch live video of the bears, or watch video recorded earlier of the bear cubs birth.

“”Observers report the mother and child communicate using grunts, groans, and squeals.”"

Maybe the bear should get a Twitter account. I mean if a Senator who speaks in incomprehensible phrases can get 400,000 followers, a bear should be able to get at least a few thousand.

COMPUTER LOVE:
BOL crew
I just found the online equivalent of the girl who doesn’t want you to ask her out so she injects a story about her boyfriend (whether she has one or not) into conversations as soon as she meets you.
I’ve been chatting with a woman at work — trying to let her get to know me. I mentioned some photos I have on Facebook, and she said send me the link. But apparently I’m only in the friend zone. She friended me with a Facebook profile she uses for work contacts only. I realized she had another profile for “”real”" friends when Facebook’s ‘people you may know’ feature busted her by showing me her real profile.
Oh well. Moving on.

The Internet flexed its power with this week's SOPA/PIPA blackouts, but make no mistake: this battle isn't over yet, and will only intensify--it might get a lot more sneaky, in fact. But this week? The Internet wins. Will students lose out with Apple's new plan to revamp the textbook industry? Or just the students (and schools) who can't can't afford iPads?

Hey buzz crew,
I would like to make a prediction for 2012 that some computer maker will create a windows 8 or (less likely IOS) tablet that will have a laptop and desktop dock which will have separate processors and RAM so that when it is docked, the mobile processors will be supplemented with the additional resources to present the user with a full OS experience. This of course will then spell the end of traditional laptops and desktops in 2013.
Thanks you all… Love the show.

Here’s one I think was overlooked. A bit out there, but could easily be done.
Google will buy T-Mobile in 2012.

Hello gang.
I’ve noticed something. I have a MacBook, an iPhone and an iPad. I also have a Kindle, a Samsung Galaxy S II, a Dell running Windows, an HP running Ubuntu and I was a .net developer for 6 years. I like computers and gadgets and I’m getting a little tired of hearing the “”Oh, you’re one of those apple fan girls”" comment (subtext: “”Oh, you’re one of those people that would pay $1000 for a piece of poo if it was lacquered in white and had an apple logo”". I like my stuff. But it’s just stuff. On Apple as a company, or Steve Jobs as a person, I don’t really have an opinion.
This holiday season I once again found myself in a heated discussion about Apple products and the people who buy them. And I realized something. The heat in the discussion was not coming from me, but from people who do not use Apple products. More often than not, I end up having to defend what I’m spending my money on. (What I’m really thinking is “”I’m a grown woman and I make my own money and I can use it however I see fit so mind your own business.”")
I’m starting to see a pattern. People I know who use Apple products just sort of have them and don’t talk about them very much. People who don’t, seem to give it much more thought and are surprisingly aggressive when they talk about people who do. Many times, when someone writes in to the show and are really upset about something, they are referring to you guys being too easy on Apple. In the words of Carrie Bradshaw “”I can’t help but wonder”", what is it about that company that provokes such passion?

Guys –
Just got finished listening to your 2012 predictions podcast and really liked it. However, there’s just one small request I gotta ask of you all.
Could you guys start saying twenty-twelve instead of two thousand and twelve? You’re adding two full syllables in that are totally unnecessary. Not to mention that everyone is eventually going to start saying twenty because no one will want to say two thousand and twenty-two, but now seems like a good time.
Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Hey Buzz Crew,
In a recent voicemail, Champ asked if the AT&T website made a mistake claiming the iPhone 4S is 4G. BT said yes, but it’s no mistake. AT&T includes HSPA+ in their definition of 4G. That said, how long are we going to keep counting the number of Gs in a phone? I’m over it.

I also have an Unlimited 4G plans, so ontop of all the webbrowsing/streaming/apps/etc. I still text like a boss. Infact it took me about a minute to write all of this ;) #TeenageSwag

Mr. Stephen Beacham,
We are the 10 percent. We are getting forced to “convert” in elementary school. We have to choose between products that work well, but cost more, or products that work for everyone but us. We are denied quality cooking utensils. Our iPhones refuse to get service. We are seen as sinister. We have been ignored by the 90%.
On Thursday, December 8, 2011, we took the first step towards recognition. We occupied Twitter. By reversing the position of your tweet stream and sidebar, the 90% are forced to endure what the 10% must go through on a daily basis. So Mr. Beacham, when you call the new twitter “backwards” you are giving us just what we want. Who are we? We are the left handers of the world, and whether you like it or not, we are here to stay. We are the 10%.
~Joseph (southpaw spokesman)
P.S. If indeed you are left handed, those righties have gotten into your head. You’re not sitting at our table at lunch.

Hey guys,
Did anyone at BoL jump on the ebay refurbished HP touchpad sale this Sunday? I guess it’s no surprise that after hiring former ebay CEO Whitman that they choose to use ebay. Needless to say the checkout crashed minutes after the sale started but plenty of use were able to purchase from ebay.ca and ebay.co.uk. The progress devs have made with android on the TP is impressive. If these refurb. tablets are basically new, I’ll be sending back my brand new Kindle Fire (as much as I love Amazon!)

Hey Guys,
Although I already own a first gen iPad, I was looking forward to seeing the Asus Prime. It was awesome hearing about it, but when a company replaces an older device, they ought to replace it soon after release. This release turned out to be awful timing by Asus because right before Christmas when tablets are popular, few are buying their product. Consumers don’t want to get the older model, but want a tablet for Christmas, so they chose another brand with a current model. I work at Best Buy in the computers department and see many consumers intrigued by the features and function of the Asus tablet with its keyboard dock, but when they learn its not the Prime, they decide to go another route, even if it requires a Bluetooth keyboard instead. Even the $100 price difference is not enough for consumers.
Love the show(s),
Danny

I am trying Skout and so far, while it isn’t a bad plan, it feels almost like a Zynga game where, yeah, you can play the game, but if you want to do most things, you gotta chuck out some cash, especially a daily, “”Who checked me out”" function. Just don’t see that it is worth it just yet as it doesn’t seem to have hit critical mass and that Facebook is still such a dominant thing. I know they aren’t the same thing, but so far, I am not as impressed as I was when listening to it being described initially.
Keep up the good work and please come back to once a day, I needs my fixes. And Siri appreciates when you say that you love it.

Hey guys,

I was watching yesterdays special show about the top 100, and enjoyed the talk about you guys being biased, and BT asking the question as to why BOL gets singled out for that. The answer is simple, you have bigger fan base than all the other shows/sites combined, so you guys have more peeps to give you a hard time.

Or, maybe it is just because Apple products are superior….

Merry Christmas!

THE WINNERS

Putting fanaticism aside (from both sides) I cannot see why the iPhone is “”hands-down”" one of the most “”important tech products of the year.
Yes it is a great device, yes it outsold any other phone model. I know a few people that have one and love it. But that does not make a device an important tech product, it just makes it a successful one. Excluding Siri, which is a great advancement in voice assisted interfacing, the device itself was nothing more than a hardware refresh with no major innovations.
At least the Droid Razr (second mentioned) accomplished something by making the lightest, lowest profile phone without sacrificing (actually improving from what I can tell) durability, functionality, or performance.

Expanding on my previous post, I also do not see how ICS was able to secure a spot when it hasn’t even seen launch on any device in the US and is too young to truly understand its impact.

You missed one. I think the HP Touchpad was a winner. Not because it was a failed product, but because it helped to push tablet prices down and show the world that tablets are indeed a viable product when the price is right. It also showed that to compete with Apple you have to offer a lower price, because like it or not and true or not, Apple products are perceived as being better.

THE DISAPPOINTMENTS

It didn’t live up to the hype”" – Who’s hype??? Apple didn’t hype 4G, teardrop design, larger screen, a maid to clean your house – it was the MEDIA. The rumor mill in it’s attempt to churn up stories before the competition set the consumer’s expectations, NOT Apple. And heck, as an iPhone 4 owner I’m glad a game-changer that would tempt me to buy out my contract wasn’t released less than a year into my current phone. I’m content upgrading every other iteration and keeping some $ in my pocket.

The Carrier IQ spy software scandal continues to grow: Al Franken wants an explanation and researchers say it might even be showing up in iOS. AT&T's T-Mobile bid is on death watch, and we perform a live demo of Siri's abortion "glitch" -- biggest problem? It's not search and it should be search. Meanwhile, Google announces that it's planning to map indoor spaces, and we envision a world of Google mapping guys on Segways in the mall and maybe even snooping around our cubicles and kitchens.

Hey Guys,
I’m a long time follower/lurker of the show and felt the need to write in…. So black Friday came along, and the blackberry playbook (16 GB) was on sale for $199.99. One of THE BEST DEALS of the weekend. I got one and I love it. I went into the store to buy a kindle fire for my wife and couldnt believe the price point on the playbook. $200 (for a better than average/good) tablet, cant really go wrong. I was lucky enough to get the last two. All of the 16 and 32 GB playbooks were almost gone. I looked behind the counter and saw about 100+ Kindle fires sitting on the ground. One employee at the store even had the nerve to tell me, and I quote “”It’s like an IPAD only smaller”" (Seems like they were dying to get some of the stock off their hands). I’m not sure what the sales numbers were, but the Fire didn’t seem to hot this past weekend. Have a good one, Im going back to playing my asian inspired edition of angry birds I was able to put on my playbook today.

Hello Buzz Crew,

Like most Americans I was shopping on Black Friday. I went to a book store that night and found a really good children’s book called Good Night iPad by, get this Ann Droyd. I flipped through the pages and thought it was a really great story. As I was reading it I thought who would need this the most. Molly Wood has most of the gadgets in the book and a young son who likes the iPad so it would be better for her. It’s a great book that reminds us that we should turn off our gadgets once and a while. Good news is that the book is on amazon and its on sale right now.
Happy Holidays,

Hello Buzz Crew,
My name is Brent from Iowa and my wife and I have been trying to determine which tablet to buy. She wants to be able to watch Netflix and Hulu and I want to be able to check email and surf the web. The iPad isn’t exactly an impulse buy and seems a little overkill for what we’re looking for, so I’ve been keeping an eye on the Kindle Fire and the Nook tablet. We both have iPhones for our music so we’re not really too worried about the hard drive space. The major difference between the two so far in my eyes is the streaming capability. Amazon hasn’t unveiled what will be available for streaming besides what they offer alongside their Amazon prime membership. The Nook on the other hand has already announced Netflix and Hulu compatibility. I really like Amazon as a company so I want to like the Fire, especially for $50 cheaper, but if it can’t compete against the Nook in regards to Netflix and Hulu playback then I think they’ve made my decision for me.
What’s your opinion on the topic? Thanks!

Hey BOL-ers
OK, so I just realized why your show can be amazingly awesome and amazingly aggravating at the same time. I’ve been hoping for something like the Jawbone UP for a while now, and now that I hear it from your show first that this product exists, I immediately stormed my way to their website anxiously anticipating to purchase one. One minor problem. The da[RN]mn thing is only operable with iOS devices! Uh…WTF? I mean I get it, iOS has a “majority” of the market, but I don’t see how you can launch a product without any USB or alternative device support immediately, oh, wait Nike+ [insert FAIL].
Sorry, this wasn’t supposed to be a rant, but a question. Since you guys are so AMAZING and have connections that rival the CIA and NSA, is there anything you’ve heard about Jawbone providing Android support or any other device support soon? And moreover, I can’t seem to find any other products like this on the market with the exception of FitBit which is not water-resistant (let alone sweat-resistant).
I absolutely LOVE the show!
Bestest Regards.

Hey buzzers,

Why do I even download your podcast anymore?

I wait a whole week, and all you do is crap on Google and praise Apple.

If Apple was always in the cutting edge of technology, I would sort of understand. But is the same freaking crap all the time: Iphone and Ipad.

The Iphone doesn’t even have multi-tasking for fox sake.

Anyway. Would you please be objective and not be such Apple cheerleaders all the time.

3. There is no indication of playing status (Played, unplayed, half way there) of individual episodes.

4. There is no way to download new episodes directly from the device.

5. If you are listening a podcast the playing does not continue to the next episode. Rather it continues to your music library – perhaps the next alphapetical song! Now, where the logic of that???!!
It’s time for a good rant, since — think about it: this update makes it very difficult to keep up with your show and any other show.
thanks,

Hey BOL crew. I have been a long time listener to Buzz out loud, going back to when Comcast didn't want to upset Tony Soprano, and the average person could eat 10 hot dogs in 3 minutes. I have never called or wrote in before, but when Molly asked for advice on Turn by Turn navigation, I figured I should add my 2 cents. First of all, let me say that I have been with Sprint for almost 10 years, and have had a Blackberry for almost that entire time. When Sprint announced it was getting the iPhone, I was one of the many people to jump the sinking blackberry ship. With my Blackberry, I had been using a turn-by-turn navigation software called Telenav. When I got the new iPhone, I did a search for Telenav in the app store, and it was there. Same company, same look and feel as what I have been using for the pas 6 years. The cost was $0.99 for the app and $9.99 a year for the turn by turn. Hope that Helps. Love the Show.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I was looking at the Litro Camera and I just realized the most important part of this photography breakthrough that no one has brought up yet. No more fuzzy images of Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster or any other of the other mythical beasties people claim to see running around out there. With the infinite focal length now we will all know if it really is Big Foot or just some big guy in a suit.
Love the show

Admit it : every so often you just wish you had that post-it note block with you to write down some vital information you’re bound to forget. After all, who on earth carries arround a smartphone with a built-in notes application, right ?

Here comes the post-it watch to solve all your problems. The photos are self-explanatory. Yes, you an actually order them. In bulk.
Love the show, Jonathan

Hey guys, I felt a little let down by your Ice Cream Sandwich coverage last week. Molly said she was excited about it but was let down… to me it seemed like she had already decided she wanted an iPhone 4S and wanted to find every little thing wrong with ICS and the Galaxy Nexus.
No mention from you guys about the data manager app, pre-canned call responses or improved notifications which all seemed pretty cool on top of other improvements. Plus the whole “”I know more megapixels doesn’t equal better camera but I still want more megapixels”" seemed a little off.
I’ve been listening since before Veronica would even speak up on the show and I love you guys but please give us android fans a fair shake.

Hello Buzz-taculous,
I’ve never written in before and I hate for my first email to be a “”Well-Actually”" but your recent comments really got my “”Obnoxious Correcting Nerd”" in a tizzy. I was just listening to episode 1563 and I noticed that you guys seemed to think that 5mp in the Galaxy Nexus is a bad thing. While it is entirely possible that they wanted to do some cost cutting, it is actually more likely that they did it to IMPROVE picture quality. In photography everything is a trade-off. When you pack more pixels onto a sensor it usually comes at the cost of low-light/high-ISO quality. Cellphone sensors are tiny and so getting the requisite amount of light on the sensor is difficult. If you have a smaller pixel density, you increase the amount of light per pixel and which lets you get better pictures in low light. Since most cellphone pictures seem to be taken in crappy light, this will have a significant improvement on the quality of the final image.
Also, 85% of people don’t need more than 5mp. On the web, 5mp is overkill. You can easily get 8×10 prints which is larger than most people print. One more thing, as you increase the number of pixels you need to increase the quality of the lens or else you start out-resolving the lens. You also start running into physics problems where the light-wave cannot “”fit”" into the pixel. The pixel can actually become smaller than the wave length and you don’t improve the quality of the image at all.
I am a semi-professional photographer who is seriously into the tech of photography so please forgive me for the “”Well-Actually”".
P.S. The Lytro is cool for the tech of it. However, I’ve been able to do a faux version of that for several years. Set your focus to infinity (makes everything in focus) and blur in Photoshop.

You know which button I miss most on Facebook? It’s not a “”dislike”" button, it’s the “”I don’t care”" button. As in: Did your kid see a dog and say something that you find funny? I don’t care. Is this person that I have not seen for 10 years listening to The Killers right now? I don’t care.
Love the show,

Hi Buzz Crew,
I love your show and used your commentary topics to create my Halloween Tombstone decorations for my front yard (putting them up on Saturday).
It’s perfect for the crowds of people that storm by my house every morning on their way to BART to go to work.
I’m sure I might have to switch out a few during October, since tech news changes so fast.

Computer Love
Here’s the story:

Until recently I had never been able to share the geeky side of myself with many people. Then I met Chris.* I was looking for certain things in a guy--1) shares my religion 2) shares my interests 3) able to hold a conversation... and Chris is all of those things. I love that.
But there's one thing he's not: hot.
I don't mean only physically. I'm very picky about that but he's cute enough. Nice hazel eyes. And not too scrawny or anything. The real problem is how he dresses–like a geek. He even sounds like a geek...

As geeky as I am--and I can't deny that I am–I don't fit the stereotype nearly as much as he does. Part of me really respects anyone who's able to let their geek flag fly, because they are always going to be judged for it and even persecuted. I've been picked on for it too. But the rest of me is really uncomfortable dating someone who my friends, and I as well, don't think is "cool." It sounds so mean... But I would also bring up this point--I think there's a big difference between not hiding your geekiness VS not trying to be stylish. I think Chris is a mixture of both those things. Like, he doesn't know how to be stylish and he also doesn't see the need to try because that's just who he is. I'm not satisfied with that.
We haven't been on a real date yet (we've just hung out in group settings). But we email each other all the time and we are getting to the point of labels. When is it okay for a girlfriend to start trying to dress her boyfriend? As much as I hate how he dresses (tall white socks with shorts--help me out here, guys, you KNOW that's bad), I'd also hate to insult him. So how can I avoid that and still get what I want, which is for him to change his style? Or do I need to just get over it? I realize I probably AM worrying overly much what other people think and even being superficial my own self.... Otherwise why would it matter what he wears...
(His name is changed)
Thanks ya'll.

Hi Molly, Brian, and Steven,
I’m a 14 year-old and need your advice. On the first day of 9th grade, I met a girl, let’s call her A (in case she might be listening.) I know I’m young and foolish, but she is the perfect person for me. First of all, she is the first person my age, that I have seen in LA that has a Kindle and is an avid reader. Secondly, she is tech savvy and possibly an Apple fangirl. She actually brought her MBP running Lion to school to do homework.
And MOST importantly, every time I talk to her I have a smile on my face and feel happy wondering how I was lucky enough to meet her :)
The thing is I don’t know how I should pursue this. I considered asking her if she wanted to do anything over the weekend, but I know for a fact that both of us have hectic schedules due to the rigorous high school we are going to.
I want to eventually ask her out, but I don’t want to ruin our friendship especially since I have her in most of my classes.
When do I do and when do I know when the time is right?
Thanks,

Abner

Hey, Buzz Crew! I know this isn’t your normal computer love story, but thought it was worth sharing anyway. My husband and I just got married a couple weeks ago (yay!), but my mother wasn’t able to come due to emergency knee replacement surgery. (boo!) What’s a geeky couple to do?! We had a guest hold my iPhone running Skype on our end, and someone helped my mom connect her laptop to her 42″” HDTV so they could watch the play-by-play! She invited over everyone she could find, and they even had pizza and cake after the ceremony as their own mini “”reception.”"
Thought you guys would enjoy our high-tech solution, and might share it for anyone else in our kind of situation. Thanks for all you do.

A few years ago, my boyfriend at the time and I were doing a long distance relationship. As a way to hang out over more than AIM or racking up phone bills, my boyfriend got me into this new game called World of Warcraft. We would spend hours running around, questing and leveling together. I guess I can blame him for my raiding addiction now.

Well, After that relationship fell through, I had already joined a raiding guild. It’s amazing how well you get to know someone’s personality when you’re working with them 3 nights a week, whether you actually see them or no. I’ve had a few relationships come out of WoW, though because we never met, they didn’t last too long. But I have heard of many couples who’ve met up on game and gone on to long lasting, happy marriages. WoW, it’s the gamer’s eHarmony.
