Later today (Wednesday), the Washington state House is expected to send a gay marriage bill to the governor. The final measure will likely contain some special language to address a concern raised by faith–based foster and adoption agencies. These state contractors don't want to be forced to place children with gay couples. But Washington law already prohibits them from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation. So how does that work now? As Olympia correspondent Austin Jenkins found out, it's "don't ask, don't tell."

The Washington State Health Department says members of 19 high school cheerleading teams have come down with a gastrointestinal illness. The teams were all at the state championships in Everett last weekend. KUOW's Ann Dornfeld reports.

The Downtown Seattle Association delivered its latest "State of Downtown" report today (Wednesday). The report finds that vacancies are fairly low for residential and office space downtown. But the downtown is still recovering from the most severe job losses in the region, and retailers are struggling to compete with merchants online and elsewhere.

A police officer in Lakewood, Washington, has been arrested for embezzling funds meant for the families of slain Lakewood police officers. He's accused of diverting the donations from union bank accounts and using them for trips, gambling and home remodeling. KUOW's Amy Radil reports.

Seattle Public Schools recently emailed parents to say their kids' standardized test results had changed. Some of the rankings had changed by a lot. So many parents flooded the district website to see the new scores that the site crashed. Now some parents are having trouble making sense of it all. KUOW's Ann Dornfeld reports.

Every year toxic algae blooms along the Northwest coast, infecting shellfish and shutting down shellfish beds for harvest. If people eat these poisoned shellfish they can become sick or die from what's called paralytic shellfish poisoning.
The algae occur naturally but for decades the shellfish industry and public health officials have been struggling to predict where the blooms will happen.

The company that owns the troubled Lucky Friday Mine in north Idaho is now the subject of a new round of investigations, only these don't come from mine safety inspectors. They're from the company's own investors. One group is even suing for what it calls fraudulent conduct.

Seattle's Utility Discount Program offers eligible residents half off of both their City Light and Seattle Public Utility bills. They just have to meet the program's income guidelines. But the program has been plagued with high staff turnover and slow response times. Applicants say that means they can't get enrolled during the coldest time of year. KUOW's Amy Radil reports.
