The Pink Triangle:
It looms over San Francisco from the flank of Twin Peaks every Pride Weekend – a huge pink triangle that’s now a symbol of gay pride. But its sinister origins are from Nazi Germany. Historian Gerard Koskovich and architect Patrick Carney — who with friends, first put a pink triangle on Twin Peaks under cover of darkness in 1996 — speak with host Eric Jansen about the pink triangle’s roots and Carney's activist civic project.

BEGINNERS: What's it like to have your 70-something father tell you he's gay? After all those years of being married to your mother? And then, he gives you relationship advice, asks you about 'house' music when he goes to the gay clubs, and practices non-monogamy with his boyfriend? And then dies, leaving you wondering what your problem is with love. So you talk to his dog. That is the Mike Mills movie, "Beginners," starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer. Marilyn Pittman presents Eric Jansen's interview with McGregor and Mills, along with clips from the movie and press package.

Helping Queer Youth: Join host Eric Jansen for a discussion about family rejection, homelessness and other challenges facing queer and HIV-positive young people and the agencies that serve them. He's joined by Jill Jacobs of Family Builders — whose Pride & Joy program helps find permanent homes for LGBT foster kids — and Curtis Moore of BAY Positives, the nation's first peer-run non-profit serving HIV-positive youth. Both agencies serve hundreds of Bay Area youth annually, both struggle with severe funding cuts and both are beneficiaries of this year's San Francisco Pride Run June 25 in Golden Gate Park.

Using her keen sensibility and eclectic taste, she sings Peggy Lee's songbook in an encore of two nights, Tuesday, May 31st, and Wednesday, June 1st at The Razz Room in San Francisco's Hotel Nikko.

Garrin Benfield: His live shows are improvisational brilliance as he uses a Loop station and many effects, creating a full live band sound as he goes. He's at Cafe Du Nord's Swedish American Hall Friday, May 20th, showing off his amazing style. Marilyn talks with Garrin about being openly gay as you try to build a career in the music industry before you're famous (thanks Ricky Martin), and how he recorded his new album, "The Wave Organ Song," almost live-to-tape, stripping it of too much instrumentation, simplifying the process, bringing a more intimate sound to the microphone.

Sexual Intimacy For Women: What is 'lesbian bed death' and how do you combat it? Is there a 'gay men bed death?' Or 'straight couple bed death?' What causes a breakdown in sexual intimacy among lesbian and other couples? The idea was first identified and named back in the '90's by author JoAnn Loulan in her groundbreaking book, "Lesbian Sex." Now, with a more detailed look into the lives of lesbians it touches, is Atlanta psychotherapist Dr. Glenda Corwin. Marilyn talks with her about her work and her book, "Sexual Intimacy For Women: A Guide for Same-Sex Couples."

Preservationist John Raines dives into the GLBT Historical Society's archives and surfaces with historic radio clips of Armistead Maupin, film star Divine, comedian Tom Ammiano (long before he was a San Francisco Supervisor and State Assemblymember) Daughters of Bilitis founders Phyllis Lyon & Del Martin, Empress Jose Sarria and more — including a gay bathhouse radio commercial from 1973. GLBT History Museum curator and Sonoma State gender studies professor Don Romesburg adds historical context. Eric Jansen hosts this special hour-long edition of Out in the Bay.

Killer Queen: The Story of Paco the Pink Pounder, is a music-driven solo show about a gay boxer who's inspired by Queen lead singer Freddy Mercury. Peter Griggs plays Paco, who struggles as a young gay athletem in the macho world of boxing. Writer and actor Peter Griggs and director Wolfgang Wachalovsky speak with host Eric Jansen about Killer Queen and about boxing as a route to build queer kids' confidence and Peter sings selections from the show. (Kiler Queen plays at Michael the Boxer Gym and Barbershop in San Francisco April 26- May 8, and at the Empowerment Center Boxing Gym in West Hollywood May 20 -June 5,)

Poet and writing professor Toni Mirosevich's latest book of poems, The Takeaway Bin, is inspired by "Oblique Strategies," a dilemma-solving game created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt in 1975. Poetry, Translation and Gays in the Holocaust: Award-winning poet and translator Cyrus Cassells reads for the first time publicly from "The Fit," his epic poem about a gay teenage Holocaust survivor. It's in his forthcoming book, The Crossed-Out Swastika, which honors young heroes of World War II times. He also speaks with host Eric Jansen about the art of translation and his love of Catalonia, and reads from his translations of renowned Catalan poet Francesc Parcerisas.

Publisher Tom Horn and photographer Rick Gerharter fill us in on the B.A.R.'s history and how it reflects Bay Area LGBT history since 1971. With host Eric Jansen, they also consider the current state of queer news media.

Lesley Gore was a pop icon of the 1960s. Now she's in her sixties and out. Discovered by producer Quincy Jones, who was also behind Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album two decades later, Gore struck pop gold with "It's My Party (and I'll Cry If I Want To)" and "You Don't Own Me," among several others. In this 2006 interview with Out in the Bay's Marilyn Pittman and Eric Jansen, you'll hear tracks from "Ever Since," her latest record, and hear her talk about her career, her music, and being out.

Judy Shepard lived through a horrendous personal tragedy that was also a painful point in gay history. Her 21-year-old son, Matthew Shepard, was beaten, tied to a fence post and left to die on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming in October 1998, because he was gay. The image was seared into the minds of millions in America and worldwide. But less than a year after his brutal slaying, Judy Shepard began speaking out publicly and became a civil rights crusader. She spoke with Out in the Bay's Eric Jansen in October 2009 about her loss, her activism, and her book: The Meaning of Matthew: My Son's Murder in Laramie and a World Transformed.

Bettina Aptheker: Intimate Politics - On this week's "Best of Out in the Bay," Marilyn Pittman talks with UC Santa Cruz feminist scholar and free speech activist Bettina Aptheker. Her memoir, "Intimate Politics," looks at her 1960s activism alongside Angela Davis, her former Communist Party affiliation, and her painful childhood memories of her father.

Milk: Celebrating the Oscars during our "Best of Out in the Bay" series, we re-air Marilyn Pittman's many-layered show about the 2008 Oscar-winner Milk. Milk won a best actor Oscar for Sean Penn as Harvey Milk and a screenwriting Oscar for Dustin Lance Black, who was also a creator of Big Love on HBO. Marilyn weaves her interviews with director Gus Van Sant and real-life Milk friends and confidants Cleve Jones, Danny Nicoletta and Anne Kronenburg together with comments and clips from actors Penn, James Franco, Josh Brolin, and Alison Pill.

Del & Phyllis - Marriage Equality Poster Gals, Part 2: Meet Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, together 55 years before the California Supreme Court finally said they could legally wed. Del died in August 2008, just two months after their second (first legal) San Francisco City Hall marriage. Hear them share their love story, their politics, and what life was like for same-sex couples in the 1950s, in their own words during a kitchen table chat with Out in the Bay founder Eric Jansen in 2006.
This week, Part 2 - Their activism: how they helped found the Daughters of Bilitis in 1955 and launched a national lesbian magazine; about the 1965 New Year's Drag Ball busted by San Francisco police that helped the ACLU take gay rights seriously; and about their 2004 marriage in San Francisco City Hall, eventually nullified by the California Supreme Court in a ruling that promulgated Proposition 8. This "Best of Out in the Bay" broadcast from 2008 includes testimonials and music from Martin's Oct. 2008 City Hall memorial, added to the original 2006 documentary for a poignant close to the program.

Del & Phyllis - Marriage Equality Poster Gals, Part 1: Meet Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, together 55 years before the California Supreme Court finally said they could legally wed. Del barely saw it in her lifetime - she died in August 2008, two months after their second (first legal) San Francisco marriage. They share their love story, their politics, and what life was like for same-sex couples in the 1950s. The core of this two-part documentary is a chat Out in the Bay founder Eric Jansen recorded with Martin and Lyon in their home in 2006.
This week: Their love story — how they met and became friends; how Martin brought Lyon out of the closet; and how, after a long-distance courtship, they moved in together (and bar-hopped!) on Castro Street in 1953.
